Micah 1 · Grade 5
The Lord Is Coming Down
Read and Think
Micah 1:1 says this is Yahweh's word that came to Micah of Morasheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem. Micah's message is for both the northern kingdom of Israel, whose capital was Samaria, and the southern kingdom of Judah, whose capital was Jerusalem.
The book opens like a courtroom. Micah summons all peoples and the earth to hear, and he names the Lord Yahweh as a witness from his holy temple. Yahweh comes out of his place and treads on the high places of the earth. The mountains melt under him like wax before the fire, and the valleys split apart like waters poured down a steep place. Before such a God, no nation can hide.
Yahweh names the cause: the disobedience of Jacob and the sins of the house of Israel. He asks what the disobedience of Jacob is, and answers that it is Samaria; the high places of Judah are Jerusalem itself. Samaria would become like a rubble heap, and its idols would be beaten to pieces. Micah does not rejoice in this judgment. He laments and wails, because her wounds are incurable, and the trouble has come even to Judah and the gate of Jerusalem. The chapter ends with a list of towns whose names Micah uses as wordplays for the grief to come.
