A Prophet Who Weeps

Read and Think

Micah 1:1 says this is Yahweh's word that came to Micah of Morasheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah. It was a message about Samaria and Jerusalem, the capital cities of Israel and Judah.

Micah opens with a call for the whole world to listen. Let the Lord Yahweh be witness against you, he says, from his holy temple. Then he describes Yahweh coming out of his place. The mountains melt under him, and the valleys split apart like wax before the fire. This picture shows how great God is.

Yahweh explains that this is for the disobedience of Jacob and the sins of the house of Israel. Samaria would become like a rubble heap, and its idols would be broken. Micah does not speak coldly. He says he will lament and wail and mourn, because the trouble reaches to the gate of his people, even to Jerusalem.
