Watch and Be Ready

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus' disciples showed Him the beautiful temple buildings. Jesus said that one day not one stone would be left on another. Later, on the Mount of Olives, the disciples asked when this would happen and what the sign of His coming would be.

Jesus said hard times would come. Some people would pretend to be Christ. There would be wars and other troubles. But He said the good news of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world to all the nations. Then the Son of Man will come on the clouds with power and great glory.

Jesus said, "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away." No one knows the day or the hour. So we must be like a faithful servant who keeps working until his master comes home. "Therefore also be ready."

Memory Verse

“Therefore also be ready, for in an hour that you don’t expect, the Son of Man will come.”

Matthew 24 · Grade 4

Faithful Until He Comes

Name Date

Read and Think

As Jesus left the temple, He told His disciples that its great stones would all be thrown down. On the Mount of Olives they asked when this would happen and what would be the sign of His coming and the end of the age. Matthew 24 begins Jesus' fifth and final teaching section.

Jesus warned them not to be led astray. Many would come claiming to be the Christ. There would be wars, famines and earthquakes, but these are only the beginning. His followers would face hatred, and many would fall away, but the one who endures to the end will be saved. "This Good News of the Kingdom will be preached in the whole world for a testimony to all the nations."

The Son of Man will come visibly, like lightning across the sky, on the clouds with power and great glory, and His angels will gather His chosen ones. No one knows the day or hour, not even the angels. As in Noah's day, people will be going about ordinary life. So Jesus' followers must watch and be like the faithful servant whom the master finds doing his job when he returns.

Show What You Know

  1. What two questions did the disciples ask on the Mount of Olives?

  2. What did Jesus say must be preached before the end?

  3. How will the Son of Man's coming be like lightning?

Matthew 24 · Grade 5

The Day No One Knows

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew 24 is part of the Olivet Discourse, Jesus' teaching on the Mount of Olives about the destruction of the temple and His return. The temple was indeed destroyed by Rome in AD 70, about forty years later, just as Jesus predicted. Jesus weaves together that near event and His final coming at the end of the age.

Jesus gives warnings rather than a timetable. False messiahs, wars and natural disasters are "birth pains," signs that the age is moving toward its end, not signals of the exact date. Believers will face persecution and the temptation to grow cold in love. Yet the mission continues: the gospel will reach all nations. Jesus urges endurance, discernment and courage.

His return will be public, glorious and unmistakable, unlike the secret appearances false teachers claim. The parable of the fig tree teaches attentiveness, and Jesus' words are more lasting than heaven and earth. Yet "no one knows of that day and hour." The comparison with Noah shows people unprepared amid normal life. The faithful and wise servant is ready, not because he knows the date, but because he is always doing his master's will.

Show What You Know

  1. What historical event fulfilled Jesus' prediction about the temple?

  2. What do birth pains mean in Jesus' teaching?

  3. How will Jesus' return differ from what false teachers claim?

  4. What does the example of Noah's day teach?

  5. What makes a servant ready for his master's return?
