Matthew 24 · Grade 5
The Day No One Knows
Read and Think
Matthew 24 is part of the Olivet Discourse, Jesus' teaching on the Mount of Olives about the destruction of the temple and His return. The temple was indeed destroyed by Rome in AD 70, about forty years later, just as Jesus predicted. Jesus weaves together that near event and His final coming at the end of the age.
Jesus gives warnings rather than a timetable. False messiahs, wars and natural disasters are "birth pains," signs that the age is moving toward its end, not signals of the exact date. Believers will face persecution and the temptation to grow cold in love. Yet the mission continues: the gospel will reach all nations. Jesus urges endurance, discernment and courage.
His return will be public, glorious and unmistakable, unlike the secret appearances false teachers claim. The parable of the fig tree teaches attentiveness, and Jesus' words are more lasting than heaven and earth. Yet "no one knows of that day and hour." The comparison with Noah shows people unprepared amid normal life. The faithful and wise servant is ready, not because he knows the date, but because he is always doing his master's will.
