Wise Men Follow a Star

Name Date

Read the Story

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem, wise men came from the east. They had seen a special star. They wanted to worship the new King.

The star went ahead of them. It stopped over the place where Jesus was. The wise men were filled with joy!

They went into the house and saw Jesus with His mother, Mary. They bowed down and worshiped Him. They gave Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Then God kept Jesus safe by sending His family to Egypt for a while.

Memory Verse

“They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

Gifts for the King

Name Date

Read the Story

Wise men from the east came to Jerusalem asking, "Where is he who is born King of the Jews?" They had seen His star and came to worship Him. King Herod heard this and was troubled. He did not want another king.

The priests and teachers told Herod that the prophet said the Christ would be born in Bethlehem. Herod sent the wise men there and secretly planned to harm the child. The star led the wise men to the house, and they rejoiced. They worshiped Jesus and gave Him gold, frankincense and myrrh.

God warned the wise men in a dream not to go back to Herod, so they went home another way. An angel told Joseph in a dream to take Jesus and Mary to Egypt. Joseph obeyed, and God kept Jesus safe. Later they came back and lived in a town called Nazareth.

Memory Verse

“They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”

Worship or Fear?

Name Date

Read and Think

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem, wise men from the east arrived in Jerusalem. They asked where the newborn King of the Jews was, because they had seen His star and had come to worship Him. King Herod was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.

The chief priests and scribes knew the Scriptures: the prophet Micah said a ruler would come from Bethlehem to shepherd God's people. Herod sent the wise men to Bethlehem, pretending he wanted to worship too. The star went before them and stopped over the place where the child was. They rejoiced with great joy, worshiped Jesus, and opened their treasures of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

Warned in a dream, the wise men went home by another way. An angel told Joseph to flee to Egypt, and he went that very night. Herod, angry that he had been tricked, did a terrible and cruel thing to the young boys of Bethlehem, but God protected Jesus. After Herod died, the family settled in Nazareth.

Matthew 2 · Grade 5

The King Whom the Nations Seek

Name Date

Read and Think

Matthew 2 shows two very different responses to Jesus. Wise men, Gentiles from the east, travel a great distance because they have seen His star. They ask, "Where is he who is born King of the Jews?" Meanwhile King Herod, who ruled in Jerusalem, is troubled and plots against the child. Even the religious leaders, who know the prophecy about Bethlehem, do not go to see Him.

The wise men's gifts are fitting for a king: gold, and the costly spices frankincense and myrrh. Their worship hints at a theme Matthew will return to: Jesus came not only for Israel but for all nations. God guided them by a star, by Scripture, and by a dream.

God also guided Joseph through dreams, and Joseph obeyed every time. Herod's jealous cruelty caused deep grief in Bethlehem, which Matthew connects to Jeremiah's words about Rachel weeping. Yet God's plan could not be stopped. Matthew shows Jesus fulfilling Scripture again and again: born in Bethlehem, called out of Egypt like Israel, and raised in Nazareth.

Show What You Know

  1. Contrast the responses of the wise men and Herod to Jesus.

  2. What three ways did God guide the wise men?

  3. Why is it significant that the wise men were from the east?

  4. How many times did Joseph obey God's guidance through dreams in this chapter?

  5. Name two places connected to Jesus' childhood that fulfilled Scripture.
