Matthew 2 · Grade 5
The King Whom the Nations Seek
Read and Think
Matthew 2 shows two very different responses to Jesus. Wise men, Gentiles from the east, travel a great distance because they have seen His star. They ask, "Where is he who is born King of the Jews?" Meanwhile King Herod, who ruled in Jerusalem, is troubled and plots against the child. Even the religious leaders, who know the prophecy about Bethlehem, do not go to see Him.
The wise men's gifts are fitting for a king: gold, and the costly spices frankincense and myrrh. Their worship hints at a theme Matthew will return to: Jesus came not only for Israel but for all nations. God guided them by a star, by Scripture, and by a dream.
God also guided Joseph through dreams, and Joseph obeyed every time. Herod's jealous cruelty caused deep grief in Bethlehem, which Matthew connects to Jeremiah's words about Rachel weeping. Yet God's plan could not be stopped. Matthew shows Jesus fulfilling Scripture again and again: born in Bethlehem, called out of Egypt like Israel, and raised in Nazareth.

God turned even Herod's evil plans aside to protect Jesus. How can that give you hope when the world seems unfair?
