Mark 3 · Grade 5
Binding the Strong Man
Read and Think
Mark 3 sharpens the conflict. In the synagogue, Jesus turned the Sabbath question into a moral one: is it right to do good or harm, to save life or kill? The leaders' silence revealed hardened hearts, and their plot with the Herodians, normally their political rivals, shows how far they would go. Ironically, they planned harm on the Sabbath while Jesus did good.
Jesus' popularity spread far beyond Galilee. On a mountain, echoing Moses at Sinai, Jesus appointed twelve apostles, a new Israel built around Himself, like the twelve tribes. Their calling was relational first, being with Him, then missional, preaching and having authority over demons.
When scribes accused Him of working by Beelzebul, Jesus exposed the absurdity: Satan would not fight himself. The parable of the strong man shows Jesus has come to bind Satan and rescue his captives. The warning about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit concerns those who knowingly call God's saving work evil and refuse it. Jesus then defined His true family not by blood but by obedience to God's will.
