Jesus entered the synagogue where there was a man with a withered hand. The Pharisees watched to accuse Him if He healed on the Sabbath. Jesus asked, "Is it lawful on the Sabbath day to do good or to do harm?" They were silent. Grieved at the hardness of their hearts, Jesus healed the man. The Pharisees went out and plotted with the Herodians how to destroy Him.

Great crowds came from Galilee, Judea, Jerusalem and beyond. Jesus healed many, and even unclean spirits recognized Him as the Son of God. Then He went up the mountain and appointed twelve, "that they might be with him, and that he might send them out to preach."

Jesus' family thought He was out of His mind, and scribes from Jerusalem claimed He cast out demons by Beelzebul. Jesus answered with parables: a kingdom or house divided cannot stand; no one can plunder a strong man's house without first binding him. Jesus warned against calling the Holy Spirit's work evil. When His family came, He looked at those around Him and said that whoever does God's will is His brother, sister and mother.
