Malachi 4 · Grade 5

The Last Word of the Old Testament

Name Date

Read and Think

Malachi 4 brings the Old Testament to a close with the day of Yahweh. The day will be like a furnace for the proud and all who work wickedness; they will not last. For the faithful the same day is a sunrise. God says, to you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise with healing in its wings. You will go out and leap like calves of the stall. The day that brings an end to evil brings freedom and joy to those who trust God.

The final verses look both backward and forward. Looking back, God says, remember the law of Moses my servant, which I commanded to him in Horeb for all Israel. Looking forward, he promises, behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of Yahweh comes.

Elijah's mission would be to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, restoring broken relationships before God's day arrives. In the New Testament, Luke 1:17 says John the Baptist would go in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and in Matthew 11:14 Jesus says John is the Elijah who was to come. Christians believe Malachi's closing promise is answered at the start of the New Testament story.
