A Refiner's Fire

Name Date

Read and Think

God promises, behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me! The Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple. In the New Testament, Mark 1:2 applies this promise to John the Baptist, who prepared the way for Jesus. The Lord would be like a refiner's fire, purifying his people the way silver and gold are refined.

God says, for I, Yahweh, don't change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed. His steady faithfulness is why they still exist. He calls, return to me, and I will return to you. The people had been robbing God in tithes and offerings. God tells them to bring the whole tithe into the storehouse and to test him in this.

Some said, it is vain to serve God. But those who feared Yahweh spoke with one another, and Yahweh listened and heard. A book of memory was written before him for those who feared Yahweh and honored his name. They shall be mine, says Yahweh of Armies, my own possession.

Return to Me

Name Date

Read and Think

Malachi 3 opens with a promise and a warning. God says, behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me! The Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple. In the New Testament, Mark 1:2 and Matthew 11:10 apply this promise to John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus. But who can endure the day of his coming? He is like a refiner's fire and like launderer's soap. He will purify the sons of Levi so their offerings will again be pleasant to Yahweh.

At the center of the chapter is God's unchanging character: for I, Yahweh, don't change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed. Their survival depended on his faithfulness, not theirs. He invites, return to me, and I will return to you. When they ask how, God names their withholding of tithes and offerings and calls them to bring the whole tithe into the storehouse. Test me now in this, says Yahweh of Armies, if I will not open you the windows of heaven.

Some people said, It is vain to serve God. The proud seemed happy. But a faithful group responded differently. Those who feared Yahweh spoke one with another, and Yahweh listened and heard. A book of memory was written before him for those who feared Yahweh and who honored his name. God promises they will be his own possession, and that people will again see the difference between those who serve God and those who don't.
