Malachi 3 · Grade 5
Return to Me
Read and Think
Malachi 3 opens with a promise and a warning. God says, behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me! The Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to his temple. In the New Testament, Mark 1:2 and Matthew 11:10 apply this promise to John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus. But who can endure the day of his coming? He is like a refiner's fire and like launderer's soap. He will purify the sons of Levi so their offerings will again be pleasant to Yahweh.
At the center of the chapter is God's unchanging character: for I, Yahweh, don't change; therefore you, sons of Jacob, are not consumed. Their survival depended on his faithfulness, not theirs. He invites, return to me, and I will return to you. When they ask how, God names their withholding of tithes and offerings and calls them to bring the whole tithe into the storehouse. Test me now in this, says Yahweh of Armies, if I will not open you the windows of heaven.
Some people said, It is vain to serve God. The proud seemed happy. But a faithful group responded differently. Those who feared Yahweh spoke one with another, and Yahweh listened and heard. A book of memory was written before him for those who feared Yahweh and who honored his name. God promises they will be his own possession, and that people will again see the difference between those who serve God and those who don't.
