God talked to the priests. Priests were helpers who taught people about God. A good priest said what was true. He walked with God in peace.

But some priests did not teach God's way. God said one God made us all. We are one family. So we should be kind and faithful to each other.

Don't We All Have One Father?

Name Date

Read the Story

God spoke to the priests. He said a good priest is like Levi long ago. The law of truth was in his mouth. He walked with God in peace and turned many away from sin.

A priest's lips should keep knowledge, because he is the messenger of Yahweh of Armies. But these priests had turned away from the path. They caused many to stumble.

God asked, don't we all have one father? Hasn't one God created us? So why do we deal unfaithfully with each other? God wanted his people to be faithful to him and to one another.

Memory Verse

“Don’t we all have one father? Hasn’t one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, profaning the covenant of our fathers?”

The Messenger of Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Malachi turns to the priests. God remembers his covenant with Levi, a covenant of life and peace. Of the faithful priest he says, the law of truth was in his mouth, and unrighteousness was not found in his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many away from iniquity. For the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth; for he is the messenger of Yahweh of Armies.

But the priests of Malachi's day had turned away from the path and caused many to stumble in the law. They had corrupted the covenant and shown partiality in teaching.

Then God speaks to all the people: don't we all have one father? Hasn't one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother? God calls his people to keep faith with him and with each other, including in marriage. The chapter ends with people wearying God by saying evil people are good in his eyes.

Malachi 2 · Grade 5

Hasn't One God Created Us?

Name Date

Read and Think

Malachi 2 opens with a direct charge to the priests. God recalls his covenant with Levi, a covenant of life and peace given so that the priest would be reverent. The ideal priest had the law of truth in his mouth, walked with God in peace and uprightness, and turned many away from iniquity. Verse 7 sums up the calling: the priest's lips should keep knowledge, and they should seek the law at his mouth; for he is the messenger of Yahweh of Armies.

The priests of Malachi's day reversed every part of that calling. They turned away from the path, caused many to stumble in the law, and corrupted the covenant of Levi. Instead of guiding the people toward God, they led them away, and they showed partiality in the law.

Verse 10 widens the focus to the whole community: don't we all have one father? Hasn't one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother? Unfaithfulness to God was showing up as unfaithfulness to one another. Malachi applies this to marriage too: God is a witness to the covenant between husband and wife and calls them to keep faith. The chapter closes with a sharp charge: you have wearied Yahweh with your words by saying, where is the God of justice?

Show What You Know

  1. What was the purpose of God's covenant with Levi?

  2. How did the priests reverse their calling?

  3. How does verse 10 connect faithfulness to God and to others?

  4. How had the people wearied Yahweh?
