The Golden Rule

Read the Story

Jesus went up a mountain to pray. He prayed all night. In the morning, He chose twelve men to be His apostles.

Jesus taught the people. He said, Love your enemies. Do good to them. Pray for people who are mean to you. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Jesus told about two builders. One built his house on a rock. When the flood came, the house stood strong. People who listen to Jesus and obey are like that wise builder.

The Wise Builder

Name Date

Read the Story

On a Sabbath, Jesus healed a man whose right hand was withered. Some leaders were angry, because they thought healing was work. Jesus asked if it was right to do good on the Sabbath or to do harm. Then He healed the man anyway.

Jesus prayed all night on a mountain. In the morning He chose twelve apostles. Then He taught a large crowd. He said God blesses the poor and the hungry. He said to love your enemies and pray for those who mistreat you. He told them to be merciful, just as the Father is merciful. He said to stop judging others, and to give generously.

At the end, Jesus told about two builders. One dug deep and built on rock, and his house stood firm in the flood. The other built on the ground with no foundation, and his house fell. Hearing Jesus and doing what He says is like building on rock.

Memory Verse

“Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is also merciful.

Luke 6 · Grade 4

Do to Others

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 6 begins with a question about the Sabbath. Jesus' disciples picked grain on the Sabbath, and some Pharisees complained. Later Jesus healed a man with a withered hand in the synagogue. He asked if it is lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath. The Sabbath was a gift from God, and doing good fits it well.

Before choosing His twelve apostles, Jesus spent the whole night in prayer. Then He came down to a level place and taught a great crowd. He said the poor, the hungry and those who weep are blessed, because God sees them. He also warned those who are rich and comfortable without God.

Jesus taught a love that goes beyond normal. Love your enemies. Bless those who curse you. Do to others as you would like them to do to you. Be merciful, as your Father is merciful. Before you point out a speck in a friend's eye, take the log out of your own. A good tree bears good fruit. The wise builder hears Jesus' words and does them, and his house stands firm.

Luke 6 · Grade 5

Mercy Like Our Father's

Name Date

Read and Think

Luke 6 shows Jesus as Lord of the Sabbath. When His disciples picked grain, He reminded the Pharisees how David once ate holy bread when he was hungry. When He saw a man with a withered hand, He healed him in front of everyone. The leaders cared more about their rules than about the man. Jesus showed that God's day of rest is a perfect day for mercy.

Before an important choice, Jesus prayed all night. Then He named twelve apostles. Standing on a level place, He spoke to a great crowd. His blessings turned the world upside down: the poor, the hungry and the sorrowful are blessed, because God's Kingdom belongs to them. Woe to those who are rich and full yet ignore God, because their comfort will not last.

The center of the sermon is love. Jesus said to love enemies, do good to those who hate you, and lend without expecting anything back. Give, and it will be given to you. Then you will be children of the Most High, who is kind even to the unthankful. Jesus warned against judging others while ignoring our own sin. He ended by asking why people call Him Lord but do not do what He says. The one who hears and obeys is like a man who dug deep and built on the rock.

Show What You Know

  1. What does Jesus' healing on the Sabbath show about God's day of rest?

  2. What did Jesus do before naming the apostles?

  5. What question did Jesus ask about calling Him Lord?
