God said to His people, Be holy, because I am holy. Then God showed them what being holy looks like in everyday life.

Respect your mother and father. Do not steal. Do not lie. When you pick your grain, leave some at the edges. Then poor people and visitors can gather food too.

Be kind to people who cannot see or hear. Stand up for older people. Love your neighbor as yourself. In the New Testament, Jesus said this is one of the greatest rules of all (Mark 12:31).

Leviticus 19 · Grade 3

Holy in Everyday Life

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses to speak to all the people: You shall be holy; for I, Yahweh your God, am holy. Then God showed that holiness is not only for priests. It is for every person, every day.

Holiness meant honoring parents and keeping the Sabbath. It meant leaving the corners of the field for the poor and the foreigner. It meant paying workers on time and being honest in business with fair weights.

God said, Do not curse the deaf or trip the blind. Rise up before the gray head. Love the foreigner as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. And you shall love your neighbor as yourself. In the New Testament, Jesus called this the second great commandment (Mark 12:31).

Memory Verse

Leviticus 19 · Grade 4

Love Your Neighbor as Yourself

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 19 begins with God's great call: You shall be holy; for I, Yahweh your God, am holy. What follows shows that holiness is practical. It touches family, worship, work, speech, and how we treat the weak.

Israel was to respect parents, keep Sabbaths, and turn from idols. Farmers were to leave the edges of their fields and the fallen grapes for the poor and the foreigner. Workers were to be paid the same day. Judges were not to favor the poor or the powerful but to judge fairly.

God said, Don't take vengeance, nor bear any grudge, but love your neighbor as yourself. In Luke 10, a man asked Jesus, Who is my neighbor? Jesus told the story of the Good Samaritan. Our neighbor is anyone who needs our help.

  1. What does holiness touch?

  2. What did farmers leave for the poor?

  3. How were judges to judge?

  4. According to Jesus' story, who is our neighbor?

Leviticus 19 · Grade 5

Holiness Touches Everything

Name Date

Read and Think

Leviticus 19 is sometimes called the holiness code in miniature. God tells all the congregation, not only the priests, You shall be holy; for I, Yahweh your God, am holy. Many laws end with the words I am Yahweh, reminding Israel that their conduct reflected God's own character.

The commands are wide-ranging. Honor mother and father. Keep the Sabbath. Leave gleanings for the poor and the foreigner. Do not steal, lie, or deceive. Pay the hired worker before morning. Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind. Judge with justice. Do not slander. Rise before the elderly. Keep just balances and weights.

Two commands about love stand out. Verse 18: love your neighbor as yourself. Verse 34: the stranger who lives as a foreigner with you shall be to you as the native-born, and you shall love him as yourself, because you lived as foreigners in Egypt. Jesus named love of neighbor as the second great commandment, and Paul wrote that love is the fulfillment of the law (Romans 13:10). The holy God wanted a holy people marked by love.

Show What You Know

  1. Who was called to be holy in this chapter?

  2. What do the words I am Yahweh remind Israel?

  3. When was the hired worker to be paid?

  4. Why were they to love the foreigner?

  5. What did Paul write about love in Romans 13:10?
