Leviticus 12 · Grade 5
The Offering of the Poor
Read and Think
Leviticus 12 is a short chapter about a mother after the birth of a child. She had a period of ritual uncleanness, followed by days of purification, before she could touch holy things or enter the sanctuary. This was about the ceremonial purity of worship, not about any wrongdoing; Scripture calls children a heritage from the Lord. On the eighth day, a son was circumcised, the covenant sign given to Abraham.
When the days of purification were completed, for a son or for a daughter, she brought to the priest a year old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering. The priest offered them before Yahweh and made atonement for her. God made a kind provision: if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons.
Luke 2 shows how this ancient law touched the life of Jesus. On the eighth day He was circumcised and named Jesus. Later Mary and Joseph brought Him to the temple and offered a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. They brought the offering of the poor. Jesus, the true Lamb of God, came into a family that could not afford a lamb. Second Corinthians 8 says that though He was rich, He became poor for our sakes.
