Leviticus 12 · Grade 4
A Humble Offering
Read and Think
Leviticus 12 gives the law for a mother after a baby is born. Having a baby was not a sin. Children are a blessing from God. But the mother had a time of waiting and cleansing before she could enter the sanctuary. A baby boy was circumcised on the eighth day. This was the sign of God's covenant with Abraham.
When her days were done, the mother brought a lamb and a bird to the priest. If she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons. The priest made atonement for her, and she was clean.
In Luke 2, Mary and Joseph brought two birds to the temple. They gave the offering of a poor family. The Son of God was born into a humble home. His parents carefully obeyed God's law.
