The Gold Has Become Dim

Name Date

Read the Story

The fourth sad poem begins with gold that has lost its shine. Jerusalem's people had been precious like fine gold. Now others treated them like ordinary clay pots made by a potter.

The poem tells how hard life became when the city fell. People who had lived in comfort now had nothing. The poem says this happened because of the sins of the prophets and priests, the leaders who should have helped the people follow God.

The people had kept watching for another nation to save them, but no nation could. At the end, the poem gives hope. Zion's punishment was finished. God would not carry her away into captivity again.

Memory Verse

“The punishment of your iniquity is accomplished, daughter of Zion. He will no more carry you away into captivity. He will visit your iniquity, daughter of Edom. He will uncover your sins.”

How the Gold Has Become Dim

Name Date

Read and Think

Lamentations 4 is the fourth acrostic poem. It contrasts Jerusalem's past glory with its present ruin. How the gold has become dim! The most pure gold has changed! The precious sons of Zion, once compared to fine gold, were now treated as earthen pitchers.

The poem describes the terrible hunger of the siege in general terms and says Jerusalem's punishment felt heavier than that of Sodom. It names the cause: It is because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests. The leaders who should have guided the people toward God had led them astray.

The people had hoped for rescue from another nation, but it never came. Even the king, Yahweh's anointed, was captured. Yet the poem ends with promise. The punishment of your iniquity is accomplished, daughter of Zion. He will no more carry you away into captivity.

Lamentations 4 · Grade 5

The Punishment Is Accomplished

Name Date

Read and Think

The fourth poem is a shorter acrostic, with two lines per verse. It returns to the narrator's voice and uses sharp contrasts. How the gold has become dim! The most pure gold has changed! The stones of the sanctuary are poured out at the head of every street. Nobles once healthy and radiant had become unrecognizable in the streets.

The siege brought desperate hunger, described in some of the hardest lines in the Bible. The poem compares Jerusalem's suffering to Sodom's sudden overthrow and judges it worse because it lasted longer. The cause is traced to leadership: It is because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the middle of her.

Verses 17 to 20 shift to the community's voice, describing false hope in a foreign nation and the capture of Zedekiah, called the anointed of Yahweh. Verses 21 and 22 end with a reversal. Edom, which rejoiced over Jerusalem's fall, would face judgment, while Zion's punishment had reached its end. The punishment of your iniquity is accomplished, daughter of Zion. The promise looks forward to restoration beyond exile.

  2. Why does the poem judge Jerusalem's suffering as worse than Sodom's?

  3. Who is called the anointed of Yahweh?

  4. Which nation rejoiced over Jerusalem's fall?
