Pour Out Your Heart Like Water

Name Date

Read the Story

The second sad poem tells how Jerusalem was thrown down. The walls and gates fell. Even God's temple was destroyed. God had warned his people long before that this would happen if they did not turn back.

The poem says the prophets had seen false visions. They did not show the people their sin. So the people did not turn back to God.

The poet cried until his eyes were tired. Then he told the city to cry out to God. Pour out your heart like water before the face of the Lord. Lift up your hands toward him. Even in the worst times, God's people can pray.

Memory Verse

“Their heart cried to the Lord. O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night. Give yourself no relief. Don’t let your eyes rest.”

Lamentations 2 · Grade 4

The Lord Has Done What He Planned

Name Date

Read and Think

Lamentations 2 is a second acrostic poem. It looks at Jerusalem's fall as the work of God himself. The Lord had become like an enemy, throwing down walls, palaces, and even his own altar and sanctuary. The poem shows that the disaster was not an accident.

Yahweh has done that which he planned. He has fulfilled his word that he commanded in the days of old. God had warned through Moses and the prophets that rebellion would lead to judgment. The poem also blames the false prophets. They had not uncovered the people's sin, so the people never turned back.

Still, the poem does not tell people to run away from God. It tells them to run to him. Their heart cried to the Lord. They are urged to rise in the night and pour out their hearts like water before the face of the Lord. The same God who judged sin is the only one who can heal.

  1. Whose work does the poem say Jerusalem's fall was?

Lamentations 2 · Grade 5

Like Water Before the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

The second poem is the most intense in the book. Its first section describes the Lord acting as an enemy against his own city: he cut off Israel's strength, swallowed up its palaces, and cast off his altar. The temple, once the place of God's presence, became like a garden hut torn down. Feasts and Sabbaths were forgotten, and the king and priests were rejected.

The poet then speaks of his own grief. My eyes fail with tears. He sees the suffering of children and asks what he can compare Zion's ruin to; it is as vast as the sea. He names a key cause: Your prophets have seen false and foolish visions for you. They have not uncovered your iniquity, to reverse your captivity.

Verse 17 states the theology plainly: Yahweh has done that which he planned. He has fulfilled his word that he commanded in the days of old. This echoes the warnings of Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28. Yet the response called for is prayer, not despair. The wall of Zion is told to let tears run down like a river, to pour out the heart like water before the face of the Lord. Lament takes God's judgment seriously and still turns toward him.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the temple become like?

  2. What does the poet compare the size of Zion's ruin to?

  3. Which books contain the warnings verse 17 echoes?

  4. What response does the poem call for?
