The City Like a Widow

Name Date

Read the Story

Lamentations is a book of sad poems. The first poem is about Jerusalem. The city that was once full of people now sat alone, like a widow. Her friends had left her.

Judah had gone into captivity. The roads to Zion were sad because no one came to the feasts. The poem says plainly that Jerusalem had sinned against God.

Again and again the poem says there is no one to comfort her. But Jerusalem still turned to God. The city said that Yahweh is righteous and asked all the peoples to see her sorrow. Even when people are very sad, they can bring their tears to God.

Memory Verse

“Yahweh is righteous, for I have rebelled against his commandment. Please hear all you peoples, and see my sorrow. My virgins and my young men have gone into captivity.

Lamentations 1 · Grade 4

Is It Nothing to You?

Name Date

Read and Think

Lamentations is a collection of five poems mourning the fall of Jerusalem. The first four are acrostics, with verses that begin with the letters of the Hebrew alphabet in order. Using every letter from first to last may show grief expressed completely, from A to Z.

Chapter 1 pictures Jerusalem as a widow weeping in the night. She weeps bitterly in the night. Her tears are on her cheeks. Her people were in exile, her festivals had stopped, and her enemies were proud. Five times the poem says there was no one to comfort her.

In the second half, the city herself speaks. She calls to people passing by to look and see whether any sorrow is like hers. She admits her sin. Yahweh is righteous, for I have rebelled against his commandment. Lamentations teaches that honest grief and honest confession can both be brought to God.

Lamentations 1 · Grade 5

No One to Comfort

Name Date

Read and Think

Lamentations contains five poems mourning the fall of Jerusalem. The book itself does not name its author. Chapters 1 to 4 are acrostics built on the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet, and chapter 5 has twenty-two verses but is not an acrostic. The careful structure gives shape to overwhelming grief.

The first poem has two voices. In verses 1 to 11, a narrator describes Jerusalem as a widow, once a princess among the provinces and now a forced laborer. How the city sits solitary, that was full of people! The refrain is that she has no one to comfort her. Her lovers, the nations she trusted, had become her enemies.

In verses 12 to 22, Zion speaks for herself. Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by? She confesses that the disaster came because of her own rebellion, and she calls on God to see. The poem does not rush to a happy ending. It models lament: bringing pain, guilt, and questions honestly before the God who is righteous.
