Lamentations 1 · Grade 3
The City Like a Widow
Read the Story
Lamentations is a book of sad poems. The first poem is about Jerusalem. The city that was once full of people now sat alone, like a widow. Her friends had left her.
Judah had gone into captivity. The roads to Zion were sad because no one came to the feasts. The poem says plainly that Jerusalem had sinned against God.
Again and again the poem says there is no one to comfort her. But Jerusalem still turned to God. The city said that Yahweh is righteous and asked all the peoples to see her sorrow. Even when people are very sad, they can bring their tears to God.
Memory Verse
““Yahweh is righteous, for I have rebelled against his commandment. Please hear all you peoples, and see my sorrow. My virgins and my young men have gone into captivity.”
