Jonah 2 · Grade 4
Salvation Belongs to Yahweh
Read and Think
Jonah prayed to Yahweh, his God, out of the fish's belly. His prayer looks back on what happened. He called because of his affliction to Yahweh, and Yahweh answered him. Out of the belly of Sheol he cried, and God heard his voice.
Jonah describes sinking into the sea. The flood was all around him, and all God's waves and billows passed over him. The deep was around him, and the weeds were wrapped around his head. He felt banished from God's sight, yet he said he would look again toward God's holy temple. Yahweh brought his life up from the pit.
When his soul fainted, Jonah remembered Yahweh, and his prayer came in to God's holy temple. He says that those who regard vain idols forsake their own mercy. Jonah promises to sacrifice with the voice of thanksgiving and to pay what he vowed. He ends with the words salvation belongs to Yahweh. Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it put Jonah out on the dry land.
