Jonah 1 · Grade 3
The Storm at Sea
Read the Story
Yahweh's word came to Jonah. God told him to go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach against it. But Jonah ran away from the presence of Yahweh. He paid the fare for a ship going to Tarshish.
Yahweh sent a mighty storm. The ship was about to break up. The sailors cried to their gods and threw the cargo into the sea. Jonah was asleep deep inside the ship. The sailors cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
Jonah said he feared Yahweh, the God who made the sea and the dry land. He told them to throw him into the sea. The men rowed hard but could not reach land. At last they threw him in, and the sea grew calm. The men feared Yahweh. Then Yahweh prepared a huge fish to swallow Jonah.
Memory Verse
“He said to them, “I am a Hebrew, and I fear Yahweh, the God of heaven, who has made the sea and the dry land.””
