Some leaders brought a woman to Jesus. She had done wrong. They wanted to throw stones at her. Jesus said, Whoever has never sinned can throw the first stone.

One by one, the leaders walked away. Jesus asked the woman if anyone was left to judge her. She said no one. Jesus said He did not judge her either. He told her to go and stop sinning.

Jesus said, I am the light of the world. If you follow Me, you will not walk in the dark. Jesus also said the truth will make you free.

The Truth Will Make You Free

Name Date

Read the Story

Early in the morning, Jesus taught in the temple. Some leaders brought a woman who had sinned. They said the law said she should be stoned. They wanted to trap Jesus. Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground. Then He said whoever was without sin should throw the first stone. One by one, they all left. Jesus told the woman He did not condemn her. He said, Go your way. From now on, sin no more.

Jesus said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will have the light of life. He said if they kept His word, they would truly be His disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

The leaders said they were Abraham's children. Jesus said Abraham rejoiced to see His day. He said before Abraham was born, I AM. The leaders were angry and picked up stones, but Jesus slipped away.

You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

Freedom from Sin

Name Date

Read and Think

Religious leaders brought a woman caught in sin to Jesus in the temple. They used her to test Him. If He let her go, they could say He ignored God's law. If He said to stone her, He would seem harsh. Jesus stooped and wrote on the ground. He told them that whoever was without sin should throw the first stone. Beginning with the oldest, they all went away. Jesus, the only sinless one, did not condemn her. He gave her mercy and told her to leave her life of sin.

Jesus said He is the light of the world. Those who follow Him will not walk in darkness. The Pharisees argued with Him, but He said His Father testified about Him.

Jesus told those who believed that if they continued in His word, they would know the truth, and the truth would make them free. They said they had never been slaves. Jesus explained that everyone who sins is a slave to sin, but if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. When Jesus said, before Abraham came into existence, I AM, they tried to stone Him. He used God's own name for Himself.

  1. Why was the leaders' question a trap?

  2. Who is the only one who could have condemned the woman?

John 8 · Grade 5

Before Abraham Was, I AM

Name Date

Read and Think

John 8 opens with an account that shows both Jesus' mercy and His holiness. Leaders dragged a woman before Jesus, not because they cared about righteousness, but to trap Him. Jesus wrote on the ground and then said, He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone. Their own consciences convicted them, and they left one by one. Jesus, who alone had the right to judge, said, Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more. Grace came first, and then the call to a new life. (Some of the earliest copies of John do not include this story, but many Christians believe it records a real event that shows Jesus' mercy.)

Background: Jewish writings tell us that during this feast great lamps were lit in the temple courts. In John, Jesus said, I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life. Jesus said He was from above and His listeners were from below. Unless they believed that I AM, they would die in their sins.

Jesus promised that those who remain in His word are truly His disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. The leaders claimed freedom because they were Abraham's descendants. But Jesus said sin makes everyone a slave, and only the Son can truly set people free. Abraham rejoiced to see Jesus' day. Then Jesus said, before Abraham came into existence, I AM. This is the name God gave Moses at the burning bush. The leaders understood He was claiming to be God and picked up stones, but Jesus hid Himself and left the temple.

Show What You Know

  1. What shows that the leaders did not truly care about righteousness?

  2. In what order did Jesus give grace and the call to a new life?

  3. What did Jesus promise to those who follow Him?

  4. Why did the leaders' descent from Abraham not make them free?

  5. Where did God first give the name I AM?
