Never Thirsty Again

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus traveled through Samaria. Tired, He sat by Jacob's well at about noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus asked her for a drink. She was surprised, because Jews did not usually talk to Samaritans.

Jesus said whoever drinks this water will be thirsty again. But the water He gives becomes a spring of water welling up to eternal life. Jesus knew all about her life, so she said He was a prophet. Jesus said true worshipers worship the Father in spirit and truth. The woman said the Messiah was coming. Jesus said, I am he, the one who speaks to you.

The woman left her jar and told her town to come and see. Many Samaritans believed. They said Jesus is truly the Savior of the world. Later in Galilee, a royal official begged Jesus to heal his son. Jesus said, Go your way. Your son lives. The boy was healed at that very hour.

The Savior of the World

Name Date

Read and Think

Jesus chose to travel through Samaria, though many Jews avoided it. At noon, tired, He sat by Jacob's well. A Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus broke three customs at once. He spoke with a woman, He spoke with a Samaritan, and He asked to drink from her jar. She was shocked.

Jesus offered her living water, which only God can give. She thought He meant water from the well. Jesus gently showed her that He knew her past, including her five husbands. She changed the subject to where people should worship. Jesus said the place does not matter most. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. When she spoke of the coming Messiah, Jesus told her that He is the Messiah.

She left her water jar and called her town to come and see. The disciples returned with food, but Jesus said His food was doing His Father's will. He said the fields were ready for harvest. Many Samaritans believed. Later, Jesus healed an official's son from far away, just by speaking.

Worship in Spirit and Truth

Name Date

Read and Think

John 4 shows Jesus crossing walls that divided people. Jews and Samaritans had been enemies for centuries over worship and history. Jesus, weary and thirsty, waited at Jacob's well at noon. A Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus asked her for a drink, and she was astonished. Jesus was showing that His love reaches across every barrier.

He offered her living water. The water He gives becomes a spring welling up to eternal life. Jesus lovingly exposed her sin by asking about her husband. He did not do it to shame her, but to show her that He knew her and still offered grace. When she raised the old argument about which mountain was right for worship, Jesus said a time was coming when the Father would be worshiped in spirit and truth. God is spirit, and He seeks true worshipers. Then He revealed Himself plainly, I am he, the one who speaks to you.

The woman now ran to tell the people of her town. She left her water jar and said, Come, see a man who told me everything that I have done. Many believed because of her word, and many more because of His. They confessed that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world. Back in Cana, a royal official begged Jesus to come heal his dying son. Jesus said, Go your way. Your son lives. The man believed the word Jesus spoke and went home. His son had recovered at the very hour Jesus spoke.
