In the Old Testament, Israel was often called God's vine or vineyard, as in Psalm 80 and Isaiah 5. Sadly, the vine often produced bad fruit. Jesus said, I am the true vine. He is the faithful Israel, and those joined to Him become fruitful. The Father is the farmer. He removes branches that bear no fruit and prunes those that do. God's discipline, though sometimes painful, has a loving purpose: more fruit.
Jesus used the word remain, or abide, many times. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. Fruit includes Christlike character, loving deeds, and people brought to faith. Fruit is not produced by straining but by staying connected to Jesus through His word, prayer, and obedience. Then the Father is glorified.
Jesus calls His followers to remain in His love by keeping His commandments, as He kept the Father's. His commandment is to love one another as He has loved us. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. Jesus calls us friends and chose us to bear lasting fruit. Yet friendship with Jesus may bring the world's hatred. Jesus prepared His disciples for persecution and promised the Counselor, the Spirit of truth, who would testify about Him.
