Jesus said, I am the vine. You are the branches. God the Father is the gardener.

A branch needs the vine to grow. If it stays on the vine, it grows grapes. Without the vine, it can do nothing.

Remain in Me

Name Date

Read the Story

Jesus said, I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer. Every branch that bears fruit, He prunes so it bears more. Jesus said, Remain in Me, and I in you. A branch cannot bear fruit by itself. It must remain in the vine.

Jesus said, I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in Me bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. When we bear much fruit, the Father is glorified.

Jesus said, This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you. No one has greater love than to lay down his life for his friends. Jesus called His disciples friends, not servants. He chose them to bear fruit that lasts. He said the world might hate them, as it hated Him.

Memory Verse

“This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you.

Fruit That Lasts

Name Date

Read and Think

Israel was often pictured as God's vine in the Old Testament. But Israel did not always bear good fruit. Jesus said He is the true vine. His Father is the farmer who cares for the branches. Fruitful branches are pruned, which means trimmed, so they can bear even more. Sometimes God uses hard times to help us grow.

The key word is remain. A branch does not try hard to make grapes. It simply stays connected to the vine, and fruit grows. Jesus said, Apart from Me you can do nothing. Remaining means trusting Jesus, keeping His words, and staying in His love. Prayer flows from this close friendship.

Jesus commanded them to love one another as He loved them. The greatest love is laying down your life for your friends, and Jesus was about to do that. He called them friends because He had told them what the Father said. Jesus warned that the world would hate them because it hated Him first. But the Spirit of truth would testify about Jesus, and so would they.

John 15 · Grade 5

Abide in Me

Name Date

Read and Think

In the Old Testament, Israel was often called God's vine or vineyard, as in Psalm 80 and Isaiah 5. Sadly, the vine often produced bad fruit. Jesus said, I am the true vine. He is the faithful Israel, and those joined to Him become fruitful. The Father is the farmer. He removes branches that bear no fruit and prunes those that do. God's discipline, though sometimes painful, has a loving purpose: more fruit.

Jesus used the word remain, or abide, many times. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. Fruit includes Christlike character, loving deeds, and people brought to faith. Fruit is not produced by straining but by staying connected to Jesus through His word, prayer, and obedience. Then the Father is glorified.

Jesus calls His followers to remain in His love by keeping His commandments, as He kept the Father's. His commandment is to love one another as He has loved us. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. Jesus calls us friends and chose us to bear lasting fruit. Yet friendship with Jesus may bring the world's hatred. Jesus prepared His disciples for persecution and promised the Counselor, the Spirit of truth, who would testify about Him.

  2. What is the loving purpose of God's pruning?

  3. What kinds of fruit does a believer bear?
