Where Were You?

Name Date

Read and Think

After Elihu finished, Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind. Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me! Job had asked for a hearing with God. Now God came, but He asked the questions.

Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding. God asked who determined its measures. He asked who shut up the sea when it broke out and set its limits. He asked, Have you entered into the springs of the sea? Have the gates of death been revealed to you?

God asked about light and darkness, the snow and hail, the rain and the dew. Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion? He ended with tender care: Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God? God did not explain Job's suffering, but He showed that He rules all things with wisdom and care.

Job 38 · Grade 5

The Lord Speaks

Name Date

Read and Think

The long debate ends when Yahweh Himself speaks. Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind. Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge? God gently but firmly corrects Job, who had spoken without knowledge in his pain. Brace yourself like a man, for I will question you, then you answer me! Job had wanted to question God; instead God questions Job.

Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding. Who determined its measures, if you know? Or who stretched the line on it? God describes creation like a builder laying a cornerstone while the morning stars sang together. He set limits for the sea and commanded the morning. Have the gates of death been revealed to you?

God turns to the weather and the sky. Does the rain have a father? Or who fathers the drops of dew? Can you bind the cluster of the Pleiades, or loosen the cords of Orion? Finally He speaks of the animals: Who provides for the raven his prey, when his young ones cry to God, and wander for lack of food? God never tells Job about the scene in heaven from chapter 1. Instead He shows Job His power, wisdom, and care. The speeches of the friends are not the final word; God's word is.

Show What You Know

  1. Who finally speaks?

  2. How does God describe creation?

  3. What does God ask about rain?

  4. What does God not tell Job?

  5. Whose word is final?
