Job 31 · Grade 5

Here Is My Signature

Name Date

Read and Think

Job's final defense is like a solemn oath in a court of law. He begins with the heart: I made a covenant with my eyes, promising to keep his eyes and heart pure. Doesn't he see my ways, and count all my steps? Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity. Job is confident that God's perfect scales would show his innocence.

Job goes through areas of life one by one. If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail, or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it, then let disaster come. He treated his servants justly, because the same God fashioned them in the womb. If I have made gold my hope, this would be an iniquity, for I would have denied the God who is above. He did not rejoice at the destruction of an enemy, and he opened his doors to the traveler.

Job ends, Oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! The words of Job are ended. Job has rested his case. He has answered every false charge of the friends. Yet his confidence also edges toward demanding that God explain Himself. In chapters 38 to 41, God will answer Job, though not in the way Job expects.
