Job 18 · Grade 3

The Lamp Put Out

Name Date

Read the Story

Bildad spoke a second time. He asked Job, How long will you hunt for words? He asked why Job counted the friends as animals.

Bildad said, Yes, the light of the wicked will be put out. The light will be dark in his tent. His lamp above him will be put out. He said a trap waits for the wicked on the path.

Bildad ended, Surely such are the dwellings of the unrighteous. This is the place of him who doesn't know God. Bildad meant that Job did not know God. But Job did know God. God later said the friends had not spoken what was right.

“Yes, the light of the wicked will be put out. The spark of his fire won’t shine.

Job 18 · Grade 4

A Picture Painted for Job

Name Date

Read and Think

Bildad's second speech began with irritation. He asked how long Job would hunt for words and why he counted the friends as unclean animals. He asked whether the earth would be forsaken just for Job.

Bildad then described the fate of the wicked. His light will be put out, and his lamp will be dark in his tent. His own counsel will cast him down, and a trap waits for him on the path. Terrors will chase him, his roots will dry up, and his memory will perish from the earth.

Bildad ended, Surely such are the dwellings of the unrighteous. This is the place of him who doesn't know God. Every detail seemed aimed at Job, who had lost his children and wealth. But Bildad was wrong. Job knew God, and God later said the friends had not spoken what is right.

Job 18 · Grade 5

The Dwellings of the Unrighteous

Name Date

Read and Think

Bildad's second speech opens with wounded pride. How long will you hunt for words? Why are we counted as animals, which have become unclean in your sight? You who tear yourself in your anger, will the earth be forsaken for you? Bildad cannot accept that the moral order he believes in might not explain Job's case.

Bildad describes the fate of the wicked in vivid images. Yes, the light of the wicked will be put out. The spark of his fire won't shine. The light will be dark in his tent. His lamp above him will be put out. The steps of his strength will be shortened, and his own counsel will cast him down. Snares, traps, and terrors chase him. His roots dry up, his branch is cut off, and his memory perishes from the earth.

He concludes, Surely such are the dwellings of the unrighteous. This is the place of him who doesn't know God. Bildad's description fits Job's losses closely, and that is the point: he is telling Job that he is the wicked man. But Job is the one who knows God. In Job 42:7, God says the friends have not spoken of Him the thing that is right, as His servant Job has.
