Not Just a Building

Name Date

Read the Story

God sent Jeremiah to stand in the gate of the temple. People came through the gate to worship. Jeremiah gave them a message from God. He told them to amend their ways and their doings.

The people kept saying the temple of Yahweh over and over. They thought the building would protect them. But they did not treat others fairly. They did not care for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow.

God said obeying his voice mattered most. He had told their fathers to walk in all his ways. God sent prophets again and again. Still the people did not listen.

Jeremiah 7 · Grade 4

A Den of Robbers

Name Date

Read and Think

God sent Jeremiah to stand at the gate of Yahweh's house and preach to all who entered. The people trusted in lying words. They repeated that this was Yahweh's temple, as if the building were a lucky charm. God told them to amend their ways and to execute justice between neighbors.

God asked a hard question. Had his house become a den of robbers in their eyes? Robbers hide in a den after doing wrong, and the people were doing the same. They broke God's commands all week and then came to the temple feeling safe. God reminded them of Shiloh, where his tabernacle once stood. It was later ruined.

In the New Testament, Jesus used these words when he cleared the temple (Matthew 21:13). God's command from the start had been simple. Listen to my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people.

Jeremiah 7 · Grade 5

The Temple Sermon

Name Date

Read and Think

Jeremiah 7 records what is often called the temple sermon. God told Jeremiah to stand in the gate of Yahweh's house and call all of Judah to amend their ways and their doings. The people had a slogan. They repeated Yahweh's temple three times, believing God would never allow his house to fall. Jeremiah called this trusting in lying words that can't profit.

God's conditions were concrete. They must execute justice between a man and his neighbor, not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, not shed innocent blood, and not walk after other gods. Instead they stole, lied, and broke covenant, then stood before God and said they were delivered. God asked whether his house had become a den of robbers. In the New Testament, Jesus quoted this when he cleared the temple (Matthew 21:13).

God pointed to Shiloh, where the tabernacle once stood. It had been destroyed, a warning that a holy place cannot shield an unholy people. God also said that when he brought Israel out of Egypt, his core command was not about sacrifices. It was this. Listen to my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people.

Show What You Know

  1. What slogan did the people trust?

  2. What concrete changes did God require?

  3. What warning did Shiloh give?

  4. What was God's core command from Egypt?
