Isaiah 9 · Grade 3

Wonderful Counselor

Name Date

Read the Story

Isaiah said there would be no more gloom for the land of Galilee. "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light." God had multiplied the nation and increased their joy. He broke the yoke of their burden.

Then Isaiah gave a great promise. "For a child is born to us. A son is given to us." The government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. He will rule on David's throne with justice and righteousness forever.

In the New Testament, Matthew 4:13-16 says Jesus lived in Galilee and brought this light. In the New Testament, Luke 1:32-33 says Jesus will reign on David's throne. The rest of Isaiah 9 warns proud Israel. The people had not turned to Yahweh. So his hand was stretched out still.

Memory Verse

“For a child is born to us. A son is given to us; and the government will be on his shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

Isaiah 9 · Grade 4

The Prince of Peace

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 9 opens with a promise for the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, "Galilee of the nations." These lands had been brought low, but God would make them glorious. "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. The light has shined on those who lived in the land of the shadow of death." In the New Testament, Matthew 4:13-16 says Jesus made his home in this region and quotes these verses.

God would multiply the nation and increase its joy, like the joy of harvest. He would break the oppressor's rod as in the day of Midian, and battle gear would be burned. Why? "For a child is born to us. A son is given to us; and the government will be on his shoulders." His names reveal who he is: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His kingdom on David's throne will grow without end, upheld with justice and righteousness forever.

The second half of the chapter turns to the northern kingdom of Israel. In pride they said that fallen bricks would be replaced with cut stone. But because they did not turn back to God, troubles came again and again. Three times in this chapter Isaiah repeats the refrain, "For all this, his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still."

Show What You Know

  1. Which region would see a great light?

  2. What are the four names of the child?

  3. What did proud Israel say about the fallen bricks?

  4. What refrain does Isaiah repeat?

Think About It

  1. The child's names tell us who he is. Which of these names (Isaiah 9:6) means the most to you right now, and why?

  2. Israel was too proud to turn back to God. Why can pride keep people from admitting they need God?

Memory Verse

“For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as in the day of Midian.”

Isaiah 9 · Grade 5

Of His Government There Will Be No End

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 9 begins where chapter 8 ended, in darkness. But there will be "no more gloom for her who was in anguish." The regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, which had been brought into contempt, would see a great light. In the New Testament, Matthew 4:13-16 quotes Isaiah 9:1-2 to explain why Jesus began his ministry in Galilee.

Three reasons for joy follow, each beginning with "for": God has broken the yoke of the oppressor, the gear of war will be burned, and "a child is born to us. A son is given to us." The child is born like any baby, yet his titles go far beyond any earthly king: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. "Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on David's throne." In the New Testament, the angel Gabriel tells Mary that her son Jesus will receive the throne of his father David and his kingdom will have no end (Luke 1:32-33). "The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this."

From 9:8 on, Isaiah addresses Ephraim and Samaria. In arrogance they vowed to rebuild bigger and better after disaster, replacing sycamores with cedars, without turning to the God who disciplined them. Leaders misled the people, and wickedness spread like fire through a forest. The refrain sounds again and again: "For all this, his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still." The chapter sets the hope of the coming King against the tragedy of a people who would not repent.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does Matthew quote Isaiah 9:1-2?

  2. What are the three reasons for joy beginning with for?

  3. What did Gabriel tell Mary that connects to Isaiah 9:7?

  4. How did Ephraim respond to disaster?

Think About It

  1. The Prince of Peace brings a kingdom of peace that never ends. Where do you need his peace in your relationships or your heart?

  2. Ephraim tried to rebuild without turning back to God. What is the difference between fixing problems by our own strength and turning to God?

Memory Verse

“Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on David’s throne, and on his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from that time on, even forever. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.”
