Isaiah 9 · Grade 5

Of His Government There Will Be No End

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 9 begins where chapter 8 ended, in darkness. But there will be "no more gloom for her who was in anguish." The regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, which had been brought into contempt, would see a great light. In the New Testament, Matthew 4:13-16 quotes Isaiah 9:1-2 to explain why Jesus began his ministry in Galilee.

Three reasons for joy follow, each beginning with "for": God has broken the yoke of the oppressor, the gear of war will be burned, and "a child is born to us. A son is given to us." The child is born like any baby, yet his titles go far beyond any earthly king: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. "Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on David's throne." In the New Testament, the angel Gabriel tells Mary that her son Jesus will receive the throne of his father David and his kingdom will have no end (Luke 1:32-33). "The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this."

From 9:8 on, Isaiah addresses Ephraim and Samaria. In arrogance they vowed to rebuild bigger and better after disaster, replacing sycamores with cedars, without turning to the God who disciplined them. Leaders misled the people, and wickedness spread like fire through a forest. The refrain sounds again and again: "For all this, his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still." The chapter sets the hope of the coming King against the tragedy of a people who would not repent.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does Matthew quote Isaiah 9:1-2?

  2. What are the three reasons for joy beginning with for?

  3. What did Gabriel tell Mary that connects to Isaiah 9:7?

  4. How did Ephraim respond to disaster?

Think About It

  1. The Prince of Peace brings a kingdom of peace that never ends. Where do you need his peace in your relationships or your heart?

  2. Ephraim tried to rebuild without turning back to God. What is the difference between fixing problems by our own strength and turning to God?

Memory Verse

“Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, on David’s throne, and on his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from that time on, even forever. The zeal of Yahweh of Armies will perform this.”
