Yahweh told Isaiah, "Take a large tablet." Isaiah wrote the name Maher Shalal Hash Baz on it. Later Isaiah's son was born. God told him to give his son that name. Before the boy could say My father or My mother, Assyria would carry away the riches of Damascus.

The people refused the waters of Shiloah that go softly. So the king of Assyria would come. But the plans of the nations would not stand, for God is with us.

God told Isaiah, "Don't fear their threats." Yahweh of Armies was the one to respect as holy. Isaiah said, "I will wait for Yahweh." He told the people to stop asking wizards. "Turn to the law and to the covenant!"

Isaiah 8 · Grade 4

A Sanctuary

Name Date

Read and Think

God told Isaiah to write on a large tablet, "For Maher Shalal Hash Baz," in front of two faithful witnesses. Then the prophetess bore Isaiah a son, and God told Isaiah to give him that name. Before the child could say "My father" or "My mother," the king of Assyria would carry away the riches of Damascus and Samaria.

God's people had refused the gentle waters of Shiloah that go softly. So the mighty waters of the River, the king of Assyria, would rise and reach even to the neck of Judah. Yet the nations would not win in the end: "Take counsel together, and it will be brought to nothing; speak the word, and it will not stand, for God is with us."

God warned Isaiah not to walk in the way of the people. "Don't fear their threats or be terrorized. Yahweh of Armies is who you must respect as holy." For those who trust him, God would be a sanctuary. Isaiah said, "I will wait for Yahweh, who hides his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him." He told the people to stop asking wizards and to turn to the law and the covenant.

Show What You Know

  1. Who were witnesses when Isaiah wrote on the tablet?

  2. What did the mighty waters of the River stand for?

  3. Who did God say Isaiah must respect as holy?

  4. What would God be for those who trust him?

Think About It

  1. God told Isaiah not to fear what everyone else feared. What fears do people around you have, and how can trusting God help?

  2. Isaiah chose to wait for God even when God seemed hidden. What helps you keep trusting God while you wait?

Memory Verse

“Yahweh of Armies is who you must respect as holy. He is the one you must fear. He is the one you must dread.”

Isaiah 8 · Grade 5

A Stone of Stumbling

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 8 continues the crisis of chapter 7. God told Isaiah to write "Maher Shalal Hash Baz" on a large tablet, with faithful witnesses, and then to give his newborn son that name. Before the boy could say his first words, Assyria would plunder Damascus and Samaria. The child's very name was a living sign that God's word would come true.

Judah had refused "the waters of Shiloah that go softly," a picture of God's quiet care. Instead, the great River of Assyria would overflow, reaching "even to the neck" and filling the land of Immanuel. Yet the chapter answers fear with faith: the nations' plans "will not stand, for God is with us."

God told Isaiah not to share the people's panic: "Yahweh of Armies is who you must respect as holy. He is the one you must fear." To those who trust him, he is a sanctuary; to those who reject him, "a stumbling stone and a rock that makes them fall." In the New Testament, 1 Peter 2:8 and Romans 9:33 apply this stumbling stone to Jesus, and Hebrews 2:13 echoes verse 18, "I and the children whom Yahweh has given me." Isaiah would wait for Yahweh and urged the people to turn "to the law and to the covenant" instead of to mediums.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was the name of Isaiah's son a living sign?

  2. What did the waters of Shiloah picture?

  3. What two things will God be, depending on how people respond?

  4. Which New Testament passages apply the stumbling stone to Jesus?

  2. Yahweh of Armies is who you must respect as ____.
  3. Because this people has refused the ____ of Shiloah that go softly.

Think About It

  1. God told Isaiah to fear God rather than people's threats. How does a proper fear of God free us from other fears?

  2. The same stone is a sanctuary for some and a stumbling block for others. How do people respond to Jesus today in these two ways?

Memory Verse

“He will be a sanctuary, but for both houses of Israel, he will be a stumbling stone and a rock that makes them fall. For the people of Jerusalem, he will be a trap and a snare.”
