Isaiah 8 · Grade 5
A Stone of Stumbling
Read and Think
Isaiah 8 continues the crisis of chapter 7. God told Isaiah to write "Maher Shalal Hash Baz" on a large tablet, with faithful witnesses, and then to give his newborn son that name. Before the boy could say his first words, Assyria would plunder Damascus and Samaria. The child's very name was a living sign that God's word would come true.
Judah had refused "the waters of Shiloah that go softly," a picture of God's quiet care. Instead, the great River of Assyria would overflow, reaching "even to the neck" and filling the land of Immanuel. Yet the chapter answers fear with faith: the nations' plans "will not stand, for God is with us."
God told Isaiah not to share the people's panic: "Yahweh of Armies is who you must respect as holy. He is the one you must fear." To those who trust him, he is a sanctuary; to those who reject him, "a stumbling stone and a rock that makes them fall." In the New Testament, 1 Peter 2:8 and Romans 9:33 apply this stumbling stone to Jesus, and Hebrews 2:13 echoes verse 18, "I and the children whom Yahweh has given me." Isaiah would wait for Yahweh and urged the people to turn "to the law and to the covenant" instead of to mediums.

Memory Verse
“He will be a sanctuary, but for both houses of Israel, he will be a stumbling stone and a rock that makes them fall. For the people of Jerusalem, he will be a trap and a snare.”
