The Virgin Will Have a Son

Name Date

Read the Story

Ahaz was king of Judah. The king of Syria and the king of Israel came up to war against Jerusalem. When Ahaz heard the news, his heart trembled. So did the hearts of his people.

Yahweh sent Isaiah and his son Shearjashub to meet Ahaz. God's message was, "Be careful, and keep calm. Don't be afraid." The enemies' plan would not happen. God said, "If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established."

God told Ahaz to ask for a sign. But Ahaz said, "I won't ask." So the Lord himself gave a sign. "Behold, the virgin will conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." In the New Testament, Matthew 1:22-23 says this came true when Jesus was born. It explains that Immanuel means God with us.

Isaiah 7 · Grade 4

A Sign for Ahaz

Name Date

Read and Think

Ahaz, the grandson of Uzziah, faced a crisis. Rezin king of Syria and Pekah king of Israel had joined together to attack Jerusalem. When the news came, Ahaz's heart "trembled, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the forest tremble with the wind."

God sent Isaiah with his son Shearjashub to meet the king by the upper pool. His message was simple: "Be careful, and keep calm. Don't be afraid." The two kings were only "two tails of smoking torches." Their plan to tear Judah apart would fail. "It shall not stand, neither shall it happen." But Ahaz needed faith: "If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established."

God even invited Ahaz to ask for a sign, as deep as the depths or as high as the heavens. Ahaz refused, saying he would not tempt Yahweh. So the Lord gave a sign himself: "Behold, the virgin will conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." Before the child grew up, the two enemy kings would be gone. Isaiah also warned that Assyria would come and the land would grow briers and thorns. In the New Testament, Matthew 1:22-23 says this prophecy was fulfilled in the birth of Jesus.

Isaiah 7 · Grade 5

Immanuel

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 7 is set during the reign of Ahaz, when Syria and the northern kingdom of Israel, called Ephraim, joined forces against Judah. They planned to tear Judah apart and set up a king of their own choosing, the son of Tabeel. Ahaz and his people trembled like forest trees in the wind.

God's answer came through Isaiah, who brought his son Shearjashub. The enemies were "two tails of smoking torches," burning out, not blazing. Their plot would not stand. The real question was whether Ahaz would trust God: "If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established." When God offered a sign "either in the depth, or in the height above," Ahaz said, "I won't ask. I won't tempt Yahweh." His words sounded humble, but Isaiah said he was trying the patience of God.

So the Lord himself gave a sign to the house of David: "Behold, the virgin will conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." Before the child would know to refuse evil and choose good, the two enemy kings' land would be forsaken. Yet because Ahaz would not trust, Isaiah warned that the king of Assyria would bring hard days and the farmland would become briers and thorns. In the New Testament, Matthew 1:22-23 quotes this verse to show that the virgin birth of Jesus fulfilled it.
