Isaiah 65 · Grade 5

They Will Not Hurt Nor Destroy

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 65 answers the lament of 63:7-64:12. God was not silent; he had been calling all along. He kept calling people to see him. God said, "I have spread out my hands all day." In the New Testament, Romans 10:20-21 quotes verses 1-2, applying the first to Gentiles and the second to Israel. Verses 8-16 then separate two groups: "my servants" who will eat, drink, and rejoice, and those who forsake Yahweh. The cluster image of verse 8 shows God preserving a faithful remnant.

Verses 17-25 announce "new heavens and a new earth," a promise Revelation 21:1 picks up in the New Testament. The new creation reverses the curses of a broken world: no infant deaths, long life "like the days of a tree," no labor "in vain," and no losing one's house to invaders (compare Deuteronomy 28:30). Some details, like death at a hundred, use the language of this age to describe something far better.

Verse 24 promises perfect fellowship: "before they call, I will answer." Verse 25 echoes 11:6-9, where "The wolf and the lamb will feed together." The phrase "Dust will be the serpent's food" recalls Genesis 3:14, signaling that the serpent's curse remains while the rest of creation is healed. The chapter ends: "They will not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain."
