Isaiah 64 · Grade 4

You Our Potter

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 64 continues the prayer from chapter 63. The people cry, "Oh that you would tear the heavens, that you would come down, that the mountains might quake at your presence." They remember God's "awesome things which we didn't look for." They say no one has seen "a God besides you, who works for him who waits for him." In the New Testament, Paul echoes this verse about what God has prepared for those who love him (1 Corinthians 2:9).

Then the people confess honestly: "all our righteousness is like a polluted garment. We all fade like a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away." Even their best efforts could not make them clean.

But they turn to God's character: "But now, Yahweh, you are our Father. We are the clay and you our potter. We all are the work of your hand." They ask, "Don't remember iniquity forever." Their cities and temple lay in ruins, and they ask, "Will you keep silent?"

Isaiah 64 · Grade 5

We All Are the Work of Your Hand

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 64 concludes the lament begun at 63:7. The opening plea, "Oh that you would tear the heavens, that you would come down," asks for a new Sinai, when "the mountains quaked at your presence." In the New Testament, Mark 1:10 uses the same image of the heavens being torn open at Jesus' baptism. Verse 4 is adapted by Paul in 1 Corinthians 2:9.

The confession of verses 5-7 is among the most humbling in Scripture: "all our righteousness is like a polluted garment." The point is not that good deeds are worthless, but that sinful people cannot make themselves clean. The images of a fading leaf and driving wind stress human frailty. Worse, "There is no one who calls on your name."

Verse 8 turns on the words "But now." The people appeal to God's fatherhood and to his role as potter, an image used in 29:16, 45:9, and Jeremiah 18:6. In the New Testament, Paul uses it in Romans 9:20-21. A potter does not abandon his work. The chapter ends with an open question, "Will you keep silent?" Chapter 65 gives God's answer.

Show What You Know

  1. What event does tear the heavens recall?

  2. Where does the New Testament use the torn heavens image?

  3. What two words turn the prayer in verse 8?

  4. Where else is the potter image used?
