Isaiah 63 · Grade 4

You Are Our Father

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 63 begins with a picture of God as a mighty warrior coming back from Edom, one of Israel's enemies. He says, "It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save." No one else helped, so God himself acted to make things right and rescue his people.

Then Isaiah begins a long prayer. "I will tell of the loving kindnesses of Yahweh." God chose Israel: "Surely, they are my people." When they suffered, God suffered with them: "In all their affliction he was afflicted." "He bore them, and carried them all the days of old."

Sadly, "they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit." In the New Testament, Paul warns not to grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). The people remembered how God led Moses through the sea. They pleaded, "Look down from heaven," and called God "our Father" and "Our Redeemer from everlasting."

  1. How does God describe himself in verse 1?

  1. God was afflicted when His people were afflicted. How does knowing God feels our pain comfort you?

  2. The people remembered what God did in the past. What has God done for you that you can remember and thank Him for?

Isaiah 63 · Grade 5

Our Redeemer from Everlasting

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 63:1-6 pictures God as a lone divine warrior returning from Edom (whose name sounds like Hebrew for "red") and Bozrah (sounding like grape harvest). It answers 59:16: "I looked, and there was no one to help." This is God's final setting right of evil, which the New Testament echoes in Revelation 19:13-15. The point is not cruelty but justice: "It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save."

Verses 7-14 begin a communal lament that runs through 64:12. It starts with remembrance: "I will tell of the loving kindnesses of Yahweh." God's sympathy is striking: "In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them." The Holy Spirit appears three times here (verses 10, 11, 14), one of the clearest Old Testament references to God's Spirit as personal: Israel "grieved his Holy Spirit." In the New Testament, Paul echoes this in Ephesians 4:30.

Verses 15-19 plead with God. The people appeal to God's fatherhood: "For you are our Father, though Abraham doesn't know us." Even if their human ancestors failed them, God remains: "You, Yahweh, are our Father. Our Redeemer from everlasting is your name." Calling God "Father" was rare in the Old Testament; in the New Testament, Jesus taught his followers to pray "Our Father" (Matthew 6:9).
