Isaiah 62 · Grade 5
Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken
Read and Think
Isaiah 62 continues the vision of chapters 60-61. The speaker vows persistent intercession: "For Zion's sake I will not hold my peace." The goal is visible righteousness, "like the dawn," and salvation "like a burning lamp." Names in Scripture express identity, so a new name signals a new status given by God himself: "which Yahweh's mouth will name."
The name change reverses exile. "Forsaken" (Azubah) and "Desolate" (Shemamah) become "Hephzibah" and "Beulah." Interestingly, Hephzibah was the name of King Hezekiah's wife (2 Kings 21:1). The marriage metaphor is bold: God rejoices over his people "as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride." In the New Testament, Ephesians 5:25-27 and Revelation 19:7 continue this picture of Christ and his church.
God's watchmen are praying intercessors, told to "take no rest" and "give him no rest." God swears by "his right hand" that enemies will no longer seize Israel's harvest. The closing verses echo 40:3 and 57:14: "Prepare the way... Lift up a banner." The herald cries, "Behold, your salvation comes! Behold, his reward is with him." In the New Testament, Revelation 22:12 echoes this. The final names reverse the first: "Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken."
