Isaiah 62 · Grade 4

You Will Be Called by a New Name

Name Date

Read and Think

In Isaiah 62, the prophet will not stop praying: "For Zion's sake I will not hold my peace... until her righteousness shines out like the dawn." The nations will see her glory, and "you will be called by a new name." "You will also be a crown of beauty in Yahweh's hand."

Her old names were "Forsaken" and "Desolate." Her new names are Hephzibah (my delight is in her) and Beulah (married), "for Yahweh delights in you." God's joy is like a wedding: "As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so your God will rejoice over you." In the New Testament, the church is pictured as Christ's bride (Revelation 21:2, 9).

God posted "watchmen on your walls" who "will never be silent day nor night." The people were told to "take no rest" in prayer and "give him no rest" until Jerusalem was praised. The chapter ends with a call: "Prepare the way of the people!" "Behold, your salvation comes!" Jerusalem would be called "Sought Out, A City Not Forsaken."

Show What You Know

  1. What would the nations see?

  2. What do Hephzibah and Beulah mean?

  3. Which New Testament passage pictures God's people as a bride?

  4. What does God tell the watchmen to do?

Think About It

  1. God delights in His people like a bridegroom rejoices over his bride. How does it feel to know God delights in you?

  2. The watchmen prayed day and night. Who could you pray for persistently?

Memory Verse

“You will not be called Forsaken any more, nor will your land be called Desolate any more; but you will be called Hephzibah, and your land Beulah; for Yahweh delights in you, and your land will be married.”
