Isaiah 61 · Grade 4

The Year of Yahweh's Favor

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 61 begins, "The Lord Yahweh's Spirit is on me, because Yahweh has anointed me to preach good news to the humble. He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives." He would "proclaim the year of Yahweh's favor" and "comfort all who mourn."

In the New Testament, Jesus stood up in the synagogue at Nazareth, read this passage, and said that this Scripture had been fulfilled in their hearing that day (Luke 4:21). He stopped reading after "the year of Yahweh's favor" and did not read about "the day of vengeance." Many see this as showing his first coming was for mercy.

The mourners would receive "a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness." They would be called "trees of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh." They would rebuild old ruins. The speaker rejoices: "he has clothed me with the garments of salvation. He has covered me with the robe of righteousness."

Isaiah 61 · Grade 5

The Planting of Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Many read Isaiah 61:1-3 as a Servant Song. The word "servant" is not used. The speaker has the Spirit (compare 11:2 and 42:1). His task is to announce good news, liberty, release, and "the year of Yahweh's favor." This recalls the Year of Jubilee (Leviticus 25:10). Then debts were cancelled and slaves set free. "Anointed" comes from the Hebrew root behind Messiah.

In the New Testament, Luke 4:17-21 tells how Jesus read verses 1-2 at Nazareth. He said this Scripture was fulfilled that day. He stopped before "the day of vengeance." In the New Testament, Matthew 5:4, about those who mourn, also echoes verse 2.

The changes come in pairs: a garland for ashes, joy for mourning, and praise for heaviness. The people become "trees of righteousness" and "Yahweh's priests." This fulfills Israel's calling in Exodus 19:6. In the New Testament, 1 Peter 2:9 applies it to believers. At the end the speaker wears "the garments of salvation" and "the robe of righteousness." Righteousness springs up "before all the nations."
