Isaiah 60 · Grade 4

The City of Yahweh

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 60 is full of light. "Arise, shine; for your light has come, and Yahweh's glory has risen on you! For behold, darkness will cover the earth... but Yahweh will arise on you." God's people would shine with his glory, and "Nations will come to your light."

Zion's children would come home from far away, and the nations would bring their wealth. Camels from Midian would come; "all from Sheba will come. They will bring gold and frankincense." In the New Testament, wise men brought gold and frankincense to the child Jesus (Matthew 2:11). Foreigners would rebuild the walls, and the gates would stay open day and night.

The city would be called "Yahweh's City." "Violence shall no more be heard in your land... but you will call your walls Salvation, and your gates Praise." Even the sun would not be needed, for "Yahweh will be your everlasting light." In the New Testament, Revelation 21:23-25 describes the New Jerusalem the same way.

  1. What does God's glory do while darkness covers the earth?

  2. Which gifts would come from Sheba?

  3. Which New Testament passage shows wise men bringing these gifts?

  4. What will the walls and gates be called?

Think About It

  1. God tells His people to Arise, shine. How can you reflect God's light to people around you?

  2. Imagine a city where violence is never heard. What would you most look forward to in God's perfect city?

Isaiah 60 · Grade 5

Your Everlasting Light

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 60-62 form the center of chapters 56-66, a vision of Zion's glory. Chapter 60 answers the darkness of 59:9 ("We look for light, but see darkness") with "Arise, shine; for your light has come." The light is not Zion's own but reflected: "Yahweh's glory has risen on you." The reversal is global: the nations, once oppressors, now stream toward Zion's light.

The pilgrimage of the nations (verses 4-16) reverses the exile. Sons return "from far," the "abundance of the sea" and "the wealth of the nations" flow in. Caravans from Midian and Sheba bring "gold and frankincense." In the New Testament, Matthew 2:11 records Gentile wise men bringing gold and frankincense to Jesus, and Revelation 21:24-26 pictures kings bringing their glory into the New Jerusalem. The gates "shall be open continually" (Revelation 21:25).

Verses 17-22 describe the transformed city: bronze for wood, gold for bronze, "Peace" as overseers. "Violence shall no more be heard in your land." The climax replaces creation's lights: "The sun will be no more your light by day... but Yahweh will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory." In the New Testament, Revelation 21:23 and 22:5 take up this image. "The little one will become a thousand." God concludes, "I, Yahweh, will do this quickly in its time."

Show What You Know

  2. Is Zion's light its own?

  3. Which New Testament passages echo the nations bringing glory?

  4. Which New Testament verses take up the everlasting light image?
