Isaiah 6 · Grade 4

A Vision in the Temple

Name Date

Read and Think

In the year that King Uzziah died, Isaiah saw the Lord "sitting on a throne, high and lifted up; and his train filled the temple." Above him stood the seraphim. With two wings each covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. They called to one another, "Holy, holy, holy, is Yahweh of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory!" The doorposts shook, and the house was filled with smoke.

Isaiah was overwhelmed. "Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips and I live among a people of unclean lips, for my eyes have seen the King, Yahweh of Armies!" Then one of the seraphim flew to him with a live coal taken from the altar with tongs. He touched Isaiah's mouth and said, "Behold, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away, and your sin forgiven."

Now Isaiah heard the Lord ask, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Isaiah answered, "Here I am. Send me!" God gave him a hard message. Many people would hear but not understand. When Isaiah asked how long, God said it would last a long time, but a holy seed would remain, like a stump after a tree is cut down.

Show What You Know

  1. How did the seraphim use their six wings?

  2. What did Isaiah call himself?

  3. What did the seraph say when the coal touched Isaiah's lips?

  4. What would remain like a stump?

Think About It

  1. Isaiah saw how holy God is and then saw his own sin. How does knowing God's holiness help us understand our need for forgiveness?

  2. Isaiah said, Here I am. Send me! What is one way you could say yes to God this week?

Isaiah 6 · Grade 5

Woe Is Me

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 6 records the vision in which Isaiah received his call. It happened "in the year that King Uzziah died." Isaiah saw the true King on a throne, high and lifted up. The seraphim covered their faces and feet before him and cried, "Holy, holy, holy, is Yahweh of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory!" In the New Testament, John 12:41 says Isaiah saw his glory and spoke of him, referring to Jesus.

Seeing God's holiness exposed Isaiah's sin. "Woe is me! For I am undone." He confessed that both he and his people had unclean lips. God did not leave him there. A seraph took a live coal from the altar, the place of sacrifice, and touched his lips: "Your iniquity is taken away, and your sin forgiven." Cleansing came before the call.

Then the Lord asked, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" and Isaiah answered, "Here I am. Send me!" His message would be hard: the people would "hear indeed, but don't understand." In the New Testament, Jesus quotes these words to explain why many did not understand his parables (Matthew 13:14-15). Judgment would last until the land was emptied, yet hope remained: "the holy seed is its stump."

Show What You Know

  1. When did Isaiah see this vision, and whom did he see?

  2. What does John 12:41 say about this vision?

  3. What did the seraph say after the coal touched Isaiah's lips?

  4. Where does Jesus quote Isaiah's message about hearing but not understanding?
