Isaiah 6 · Grade 5

Woe Is Me

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 6 records the vision in which Isaiah received his call. It happened "in the year that King Uzziah died." Isaiah saw the true King on a throne, high and lifted up. The seraphim covered their faces and feet before him and cried, "Holy, holy, holy, is Yahweh of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory!" In the New Testament, John 12:41 says Isaiah saw his glory and spoke of him, referring to Jesus.

Seeing God's holiness exposed Isaiah's sin. "Woe is me! For I am undone." He confessed that both he and his people had unclean lips. God did not leave him there. A seraph took a live coal from the altar, the place of sacrifice, and touched his lips: "Your iniquity is taken away, and your sin forgiven." Cleansing came before the call.

Then the Lord asked, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" and Isaiah answered, "Here I am. Send me!" His message would be hard: the people would "hear indeed, but don't understand." In the New Testament, Jesus quotes these words to explain why many did not understand his parables (Matthew 13:14-15). Judgment would last until the land was emptied, yet hope remained: "the holy seed is its stump."
