Isaiah 6 · Grade 4
A Vision in the Temple
Read and Think
In the year that King Uzziah died, Isaiah saw the Lord "sitting on a throne, high and lifted up; and his train filled the temple." Above him stood the seraphim. With two wings each covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. They called to one another, "Holy, holy, holy, is Yahweh of Armies! The whole earth is full of his glory!" The doorposts shook, and the house was filled with smoke.
Isaiah was overwhelmed. "Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips and I live among a people of unclean lips, for my eyes have seen the King, Yahweh of Armies!" Then one of the seraphim flew to him with a live coal taken from the altar with tongs. He touched Isaiah's mouth and said, "Behold, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away, and your sin forgiven."
Now Isaiah heard the Lord ask, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" Isaiah answered, "Here I am. Send me!" God gave him a hard message. Many people would hear but not understand. When Isaiah asked how long, God said it would last a long time, but a holy seed would remain, like a stump after a tree is cut down.
