Isaiah 56 · Grade 4

My House of Prayer

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 56 opens a new section of the book. God says, "Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is near." He blesses the person who "keeps the Sabbath without profaning it and keeps his hand from doing any evil."

Some people worried they would be shut out of God's people, including foreigners and others who had been excluded from temple worship. God speaks to them kindly. Foreigners who "love Yahweh's name" and hold fast his covenant are welcome: "I will bring these to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer."

God says, "my house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples." In the New Testament, Jesus quoted this when he drove the sellers out of the temple (Mark 11:17). But the chapter ends with a warning about Israel's leaders. They were like blind watchmen and lazy shepherds who only looked out for themselves.

  1. What does God bless in verse 2?

  2. Who worried they would be shut out?

  3. In the New Testament, where did Jesus quote verse 7?

  4. What were Israel's leaders like?

Think About It

  1. God welcomes people from every nation into His house. How can you help people who feel left out at church feel welcome?

  2. The leaders only looked out for themselves. What does it look like for a leader to care for others instead?

Memory Verse

I will bring these to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”

Isaiah 56 · Grade 5

Joined to Yahweh

Read and Think

Isaiah 56 begins the third major section of chapters 40-66, often focused on life in the restored community. It opens with ethics grounded in grace: "Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is near." The Sabbath is highlighted as a covenant sign.

The surprise is who is included. Deuteronomy 23:1-8 excluded certain people from the assembly, including some foreigners and eunuchs. God now promises those who were excluded but hold fast his covenant "a memorial and a name better than of sons and of daughters" and "an everlasting name that will not be cut off." Foreigners who join themselves to Yahweh will be brought "to my holy mountain." In the New Testament, Acts 8:26-39 tells of an Ethiopian official reading Isaiah and being baptized, a fulfillment of this welcome.

Verse 7 is the climax: "my house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples." In the New Testament, Jesus quoted it when clearing the temple court where Gentiles prayed (Mark 11:17). Verse 8 promises, "I will yet gather others to him, in addition to his own who are gathered." The chapter turns to judgment on Israel's leaders: "His watchmen are blind," "mute dogs" who cannot bark, and shepherds who "have all turned to their own way."

  1. Who does God bless for keeping the Sabbath?

  2. Which passage had excluded certain people from the assembly?

  3. Which New Testament passage shows this welcome fulfilled?

  4. In the New Testament, where did Jesus quote verse 7?
