Read and Think

Isaiah 56 begins the third major section of chapters 40-66, often focused on life in the restored community. It opens with ethics grounded in grace: "Maintain justice and do what is right, for my salvation is near." The Sabbath is highlighted as a covenant sign.

The surprise is who is included. Deuteronomy 23:1-8 excluded certain people from the assembly, including some foreigners and eunuchs. God now promises those who were excluded but hold fast his covenant "a memorial and a name better than of sons and of daughters" and "an everlasting name that will not be cut off." Foreigners who join themselves to Yahweh will be brought "to my holy mountain." In the New Testament, Acts 8:26-39 tells of an Ethiopian official reading Isaiah and being baptized, a fulfillment of this welcome.

Verse 7 is the climax: "my house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples." In the New Testament, Jesus quoted it when clearing the temple court where Gentiles prayed (Mark 11:17). Verse 8 promises, "I will yet gather others to him, in addition to his own who are gathered." The chapter turns to judgment on Israel's leaders: "His watchmen are blind," "mute dogs" who cannot bark, and shepherds who "have all turned to their own way."
