Isaiah 55 · Grade 4
Seek Yahweh While He May Be Found
Read and Think
Isaiah 55 is a big invitation. "Hey! Come, everyone who thirsts, to the waters! Come, he who has no money, buy, and eat!" God asks, "Why do you spend money for that which is not bread?" People were spending their lives on things that don't satisfy. God offers "an everlasting covenant" and "the sure mercies of David." In the New Testament, Jesus invites the thirsty to come to him (John 7:37).
God calls, "Seek Yahweh while he may be found. Call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way.... Let him return to Yahweh, and he will have mercy on him." Then God explains, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways." "As the heavens are higher than the earth," his ways are higher than ours.
God compares his word to rain and snow. They water the earth and make it grow, "so is my word that goes out of my mouth: it will not return to me void." The chapter ends in celebration: "For you shall go out with joy, and be led out with peace." The mountains will sing, "and all the trees of the fields will clap their hands."
