Isaiah 54 · Grade 4

A Covenant of Peace

Name Date

Read and Think

After the Servant's suffering in chapter 53 comes joy in chapter 54. God tells Zion, pictured as a woman with no children, to "Sing." Her family will grow so large she must "Enlarge the place of your tent... lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes." In the New Testament, Paul quotes verse 1 in Galatians 4:27.

God speaks like a loving husband: "For your Maker is your husband; Yahweh of Armies is his name." The exile felt like being abandoned, but it was short: "For a small moment I have forsaken you, but I will gather you with great mercies." God compares this promise to the one he made to Noah after the flood.

Then comes a beautiful promise: "For the mountains may depart, and the hills be removed, but my loving kindness will not depart from you, and my covenant of peace will not be removed." God would rebuild Zion with precious stones. "All your children will be taught by Yahweh." In the New Testament, Jesus quotes this in John 6:45.

  1. Where does Paul quote verse 1?

  2. How long did God say He forsook them?

  3. What promise does God compare this to?

  4. In the New Testament, where does Jesus quote verse 13?

Think About It

  1. God's love is more lasting than mountains. When might you need to remember this promise?

  2. God said, Enlarge the place of your tent. How might God be calling you to make room for more people in your life?

Memory Verse

For the mountains may depart, and the hills be removed, but my loving kindness will not depart from you, and my covenant of peace will not be removed,” says Yahweh who has mercy on you.

Isaiah 54 · Grade 5

The Heritage of Yahweh's Servants

Name Date

Read and Think

Isaiah 54 follows what many call the fourth Servant Song as its fruit: the Servant "will see his offspring" (53:10), and now barren Zion bears countless children. Abraham's wife Sarah, once barren, stands in the background (51:2). Zion must expand her tent like Israel in the wilderness, for her descendants "will possess the nations." In the New Testament, Paul quotes verse 1 in Galatians 4:27 about the heavenly Jerusalem.

God's relationship with Zion is a marriage restored. "For your Maker is your husband... The Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer. He will be called the God of the whole earth." The exile is described honestly but put in proportion: "For a small moment I have forsaken you... but with everlasting loving kindness I will have mercy on you." Just as God swore that the waters of Noah would not again cover the earth, he swears not to rebuke Zion. Hebrew hesed, "loving kindness," is God's loyal covenant love.

The new Zion will be built with sapphires, rubies, and jewels, echoed in the New Testament's New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:18-21). Its true security is spiritual: "All your children will be taught by Yahweh," which Jesus quotes in the New Testament (John 6:45). "No weapon that is formed against you will prevail." The chapter ends by calling this "the heritage of Yahweh's servants"—the first time Isaiah uses the plural "servants." The one Servant's work produces many servants.
