Isaiah 54 · Grade 5
The Heritage of Yahweh's Servants
Read and Think
Isaiah 54 follows what many call the fourth Servant Song as its fruit: the Servant "will see his offspring" (53:10), and now barren Zion bears countless children. Abraham's wife Sarah, once barren, stands in the background (51:2). Zion must expand her tent like Israel in the wilderness, for her descendants "will possess the nations." In the New Testament, Paul quotes verse 1 in Galatians 4:27 about the heavenly Jerusalem.
God's relationship with Zion is a marriage restored. "For your Maker is your husband... The Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer. He will be called the God of the whole earth." The exile is described honestly but put in proportion: "For a small moment I have forsaken you... but with everlasting loving kindness I will have mercy on you." Just as God swore that the waters of Noah would not again cover the earth, he swears not to rebuke Zion. Hebrew hesed, "loving kindness," is God's loyal covenant love.
The new Zion will be built with sapphires, rubies, and jewels, echoed in the New Testament's New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:18-21). Its true security is spiritual: "All your children will be taught by Yahweh," which Jesus quotes in the New Testament (John 6:45). "No weapon that is formed against you will prevail." The chapter ends by calling this "the heritage of Yahweh's servants"—the first time Isaiah uses the plural "servants." The one Servant's work produces many servants.
